Civil Rights Movement Discussed at the ARC
A group of Espoon Yhteislyseo Upper Secondary School students paid a visit to the American Resource Center on Friday, March 1. The visit was part of a special interdisciplinary course entitled History in English: Freedom Struggles From Around the World.

ARC Scholarship 2012 to Turku (Feb. 25, 2013)
Ms. Suvi Karila of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku has been selected as the winner of the 2012 ARC Scholarship.

American Resource Center Scholarship 2011 Awarded (Mar. 8, 2012)
The ARC Grant 2011 was awarded to Ms. Paula Siltanen on March 8 in Tampere. Public Affairs Officer Marjut Robinson presented the certificate and congratulated the winner on her achievement.

The U.S. Embassy’s Counselor for Press and Cultural Affairs Marjut Robinson announced the 2010 award recipient of the American Resource Center grant in the America in Living Color Seminar in Tampere on March 11.

Ms. Janniina Elo from the Department of Early Childhood Education at the University of Tampere is the winner of the ARC scholarship grant 2010.

Presentation on Cultural Regions in the U.S.
On December 16, history students from the Etu-Toolo High School visited the American Resource Center, where Assistant Public Affairs Officer David McGuire gave a presentation on the cultural regions in the United States.

Political Officer Hunter Treseder Lectured at the American Resource Center
Hunter Treseder from the Political-Economic Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy Helsinki, gave a presentation on “Studying and Working in the U.S.A." at the American Resource Center on November 22. Mr. Treseder started by presenting the similarities between Finland and the United States. He discussed a large variety of public and private schools and higher education institutions in the U.S. as well as diverse practices regarding admissions, tuitions, scholarships, and auditions.

Munkkiniemi High School Students Visit the ARC
May 19, 2010 A group of Swedish speaking students from Munkkiniemi High School in Helsinki visited the ARC with their English teacher on May 19. They were given a tour of the premises and an introduction of the ARC collections and services.

Distinguished Guests at the ARC
May 12, 2010 Mrs. Laura Stavridis and Mrs. Tiina Laisi-Puheloinen visited the American Resource Center on May 12. The visit was part of the spouses’ program during the visit of Admiral James G. Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, to Helsinki, hosted by General Ari Puheloinen.

English Textbook Editors Visit the ARC
May 7, 2010 A group of English language teachers and editors who also work as textbook writers for WSOYpro visited the ARC to learn about its services and collection. They were briefed about exchange programs for secondary school educators organized by the Embassy's Public Affairs Section and the wealth of materials available for teachers at the ARC.

American Resource Center Commemorates Women’s History Month
March 30, 2010 Fulbright Scholar Rainey Tisdale gave a guest lecture on “Women’s Identity in History – the Museum Perspective” at the American Resource Center on March 30. Ms. Tisdale’s presentation explored the five interactive phases of women’s representation theory created by Peggy McIntosh.

March 16, 2010 A group of students and teachers from Haukilahti High School visited the American Resource Center to meet with Public Diplomacy Officer Dmitri Tarakhovsky from Washington D.C.

ARC Celebrates the African American Cinema
February 10, 2010 February is National African American History Month in the United States and on February 10, the American Resource Center arranged a lecture on the history of the African American cinema with the title “Mustat amerikkalaiset Yhdysvaltain elokuvahistoriassa.”

February 3, 2010 Mr. Tuomas Koskenniemi from the University of Helsinki has been selected as the winner of the 2009 ARC Scholarship with his Master’s thesis entitled “We Are All Georgians, Aren’t We? The Neoconservative Reaction to the Russia-Georgia War.”

Susanne Setälä Received the 2007 ARC Grant
February 20, 2008 Susanne Setälä from the Department of English at Turku University received the American Resource Center grant on February 20th. The annual grant is intended for students of Finnish nationality, enrolled at a Finnish university, who are working on a Master’s thesis on a topic related to the United States.

American Resource Center (1946-2006) Celebrating Its 60th Anniversary
May 17, 2006 The first American library in Finland, operated by the United States Information Service, opened at Kalevankatu 13 in Helsinki in 1946, with a modest collection of 2,000 books.
