Success stories from the Federal Government

  • U of Michigan and U of Turku making fuel from sunlight:
  • Together, the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the California Energy Commission (CEC), and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) will invest up to $13.5 million to support the development of natural gas engines and vehicles.  As part of the cost-shared projects, companies selected for awards will invest nearly $8 million in additional funds to support $21 million in total projects:
  • To help the RSF achieve its goal to produce as much energy on-site as it uses, a 1.6 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) system is being installed on the NREL campus. The system comprises more than 1,800 panels soaking in 240 watts each of the Colorado sun. But the roof alone doesn't zero out the energy equation. Additional PV will be installed on the RSF expansion (currently under construction) and on a nearby garage and parking lot:
  • A new low-cost etching technique developed at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory can put a trillion holes in a silicon wafer the size of a compact disc. The breakthrough by NREL scientists likely will lead to lower-cost solar cells that are nonetheless more efficient than the ones used on rooftops and in solar arrays today:
  • MIT engineer Angela Belcher is now taking a new approach that would not only remove carbon dioxide from the environment, but also turn it into something useful: solid carbonates that could be used for building construction:
  • U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today the selection of five projects to build and strengthen "innovation ecosystems" that will accelerate the movement of cutting-edge energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies from university laboratories into the market. This is the first time the Department is funding this type of university-based commercialization effort.  The ecosystems will foster collaborative environments, bringing together key players from universities, the private sector, the federal government and Department of Energy National Laboratories to identify and develop new clean energy technologies and help them succeed in the marketplace. The projects will receive a total of $5.3 million in federal funding over three years, which will be leveraged with grantee investments to support $9 million in total projects
  • Introducing a New Farmers Market in the U.S. Government Office Building Cafeteria: In the continuing efforts to provide cafeteria patrons with healthier food choices, the State Department, together with its food service contractor, I.L. Creations, announced the integration of a Farmers Market in the main building cafeteria.  The Farmers Market features locally grown produce, providing patrons with healthy menu alternatives and more sustainable food options. 

Success Stories from State and Municipal organizations

  • Colleges around the country are embracing greener ways.  Maine’s College of the Atlantic runs a sustainable, organic farm; was the first US college to be carbon neutral and maintain a zero carbon output –;  The campus boasts the state's largest solar array, and is graced with gorgeous green buildings, including the iconic, pioneering Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. The geothermally heated building uses only about 20% as much energy as a typical structure, and employs such advanced features as extensive daylighting, impressive insulation, recycled materials, powerful ventilation and a green roof;  Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, is home to an impressive Ecovillage, which is working toward the goals of 75% reduction in energy and water use and a 50% reduction in solid waste.   • Oregon environmental Council. OEC has helped achieve major state action on  global warming, including adoption of clean car standards that will cut global warming pollution from cars by 30% by 2016, a low-carbon fuel standard that will cut global warming pollution from transportation fuels by 10% by 2020, and the nation’s second strongest state-level greenhouse gas reduction goals. We participated in the Western Climate Initiative to develop a regional carbon cap-and-invest system, now being forwarded at the national level:
