Cuba Transition Coordinator Caleb McCarry Visited Finland
The Department of State’s Cuba Transition Coordinator Caleb McCarry visited Helsinki September 29 for meetings with MFA officials and journalists. Meeting with the MFA's Directors for both Latin America and Human Rights, McCarry stressed that the upcoming months are likely to be a time of great change in Cuba, and that the U.S. and Europe must be prepared to work jointly to foster a true democratic transition as opportunities present themselves. He emphasized that change in Cuba must be led by the Cuban people themselves. McCarry held an on-the-record session with print journalists, gave a television interview, and engaged in a discussion and question and answer session with professors and students from Helsinki University's Latin American Studies Department.
