Ambassador Ware's Remarks to Lotta Tradition Society in Rovaniemi

"Dear Lotta Ladies, you strong women of Finland, I am honored to be with you for this day. It is a pleasure to be with Minister Rehn and I thank her for her friendship when I arrived as a new ambassador. Thanks also to Gov. Pokka for helping organize my visit with the Lottas here. Greetings also to Mayor Gardin.

I am here, as the representative of the United States, to say that we have admiration for the many important tasks which Lottas did so bravely and well during the war years.

You were very young women – sometimes even children – and you took the burdens from your soldiers and strengthened your country during harsh conditions. You enriched and protected the soldiers lives in dozens of ways – and you ensured the future of Finland.

Now, not only in your country, but also in other countries where people are fighting for their freedoms, we are finally learning about your courage, determination and vital work.

The past period – the dark years of silence – have finally ended. We are in a time of thankfulness for your stories and service.

On behalf of 300 million Americans in a country with deep ties to yours, I thank you for being an example to all of us."
