NASA Speakers Thrill Students

On October 23-24, NASA officials Ellen Carpenter and George Sydnor wowed students with presentations on the U.S. National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA) and its specialized wind tunnels for testing aircraft and spacecraft. Showing videos of planes that fly several times the speed of sound, the NASA officials explained how NASA tests the avionic properties of aircraft to increase performance and overall safety. They also spoke about the importance of studying science, staying in school and life-long learning. Speaking specifically to the young women in the audience, Ms. Carpenter emphasized the great opportunities for women who pursue careers in technical and scientific fields. At the Lumon High School in Vantaa, the NASA officials spoke to over 320 high school students. They also spoke to 70 students at the Lintumetsän School in Espoo and the automotive design students at Stadia Helsinki Polytechnic. Ms. Carpenter and Mr. Sydnor are visiting Finland to evaluate a high-capacity motor ABB is building in Espoo for a large project at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
