Weaving Hope -- Afghan American Visits Lapland University

On November 30, Ms. Tooba Mayel visited Rovaniemi to discuss the significant work Arzu is doing to improve lives in Afghanistan. Arzu, meaning "hope" in Dari, is a non-profit organization that provides sustainable income to over 700 Afghan women by marketing the high-quality rugs they weave. Ms. Mayel shared "on the ground" stories about Afghanistan and the important literacy, education and health care programs Arzu is able to support. At the University of Lapland, Ms. Mayel met with representatives from the school’s International Relations, Textiles and Clothing Design, and Women’s Studies Departments. Ms. Mayel was accompanied by Embassy Officer Glenn Lewis. You can learn more about Arzu at www.arzurugs.org.
