Smithsonian Photographer Carolyn Russo Visits Finland
Carolyn Russo, a photographer and curator from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, visited Finland September 28 - October 5. During her extensive tour of Finland, she spoke of her work to various audiences at the Universities of Joensuu, Turku and Tampere and to an enthusiastic crowd of students at the Juhana Herttua high school in Turku. Ms. Russo was also the keynote speaker at the Space Exhibition Opening in the Helsinki City Library.
In addition to the speaking engagements Ms. Russo’s program in Finland included several visits to museums and galleries as well as meetings with Finnish artists and the media. She also prepared materials for her next project, photographing several airport towers around Finland.
Carolyn Russo has worked at the National Air and Space Museum since 1988 as a staff photographer and recently as a museum specialist in the Aeronautics Division. She is the curator and photographer of the current traveling exhibit In Plane View: Abstractions of Flight on a national tour 2009 – 2012 and author of the book publications In Plane View: Abstractions of Flight, Artifacts of Flight and Women and Flight: Portraits of Contemporary Women Pilots.
