    Everybody Can Dance

    Alito Alessi, (Executive Director of DanceAbility International) came to Helsinki summer 2015 to conduct a DanceAbility Teacher Certification Course. Dancers, including people with and without disabilities, and professionals working with people with disabilities came from all around Finland and beyond to attend this course and related workshops.

    U.S. Embassy Helsinki was proud to host the State Department's first ever Special Envoy for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Intersexed (LGBTI) Human Rights, Randy Berry, during Helsinki Pride, June 27-28.

    Cmdr. Kevin Hoffman, executive officer, USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) gives a tour of the ship to U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Finland, Bruce J. Oreck and guests of the embassy July 4, 2015. Jason Dunham, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer homeported in Norfolk, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

    U.S. Embassy Helsinki celebrated America’s 239th Independence Day on Wednesday, June 17. We welcomed over one thousand distinguished guests to the Wild West-themed party – an expression of the flourishing friendship and strong ties between our nations.

    On Monday, June 8, U.S. Ambassador Bruce J. Oreck and Helsinki University Rector Jukka Kola signed the American Resource Center Cooperative Agreement. The agreement – originally established in 1993 – ensures continued, close cooperation for an additional five years.

    Finlandia literature prize winning author Jussi Valtonen visited the Helsinki University Library on June 4. He was interviewed by Laura Noreila from the League of Finnish-American Friendship Societies.

    American Resource Center Grant 2014 awardees were celebrated on May 7 at the Helsinki University Kaisa Library. Scholarships were presented to Ms. Anna Wennäkoski and Mr. Joonas Tuhkuri.

    The American Resource Center had the pleasure of hosting a lecture by translator Liesl Yamaguchi at Helsinki University Library on April 28. Liesl's translation of Väinö Linna's “Tuntematon Sotilas” will be published on April 30th.

    Ambassador Oreck Visits the Schildt Upper Secondary School (Home to the winners of the AEC!)

    U.S. Ambassador Bruce J. Oreck visited the Schildt Upper Secondary school in Jyväskylä on March 5, 2015. The visit was a follow-up to the Ambassador's Entrepreneurial Challenge (AEC), which brought students from all over Finland to Helsinki to pitch their business ideas to the Ambassador and a panel of judges in November 2014.

    U.S. Special Arctic Representative Admiral Papp Visited Finland

    U.S. Special Representative for the Arctic Admiral Robert J. Papp visited Finland from January 22-25. A highlight of his trip was a visit to Inari on Saturday, January 24, where he met with municipal leaders and representatives of local businesses to discuss tourism, Arctic testing possibilities, and environmental challenges.

    Ambassador Oreck Opens Discover America Pavilion at Travel Fair

    Ambassador Bruce Oreck on January 15 opened the Discover America Pavilion at Nordic Travel Fair 2015. After the ribbon-cutting the Ambassador greeted the exhibitors at the pavilion. The annual travel fair gathers together industry professionals and travel aficionados at Expo and Convention Centre Helsinki. This year the fair is themed “Where the Whole World Meets.”
